“I'm looking forward to the Sankofa Journey because I still believe the Church is the mechanism God has given us to realize His kingdom and reconcile all things to Himself. The Church is the largest, best-organized institution we have with the power to address racism in all its aspects--ideological, material, and spiritual. I look forward to connecting with siblings in Christ as we are all touched by the locations of the journey and the power of our experiences.”

Michael Emerson
Chavanne Fellow in Religion and Public Policy at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy
"The Sankofa experience is powerful. To travel together, experiencing and discussing issues near and dear to God is a blessing.
I am excited to be part of the experience and get to know each person on the journey as we explore what God wants us to learn and do."

Where students learn history by standing in it
Sankofa Student Experience | 5 Days, 4 Nights
Sankofa is a West African word meaning "go back and get it." Our Student Experience takes young people to the places where our nation's racial history actually happened, and gives them the tools to make sense of what they find there. Students travel together, learn together, and process together. What they carry home is not a set of facts. It is a formed conviction about who their neighbor is.
YOUR TRIP LEADERS
This Sankofa Journey will feature special presentations by Michael Emerson and Glenn Bracey, co-authors of The Religion of Whiteness: How Racism Distorts Christian Faith. They are teaming up with Catalyst for Harmony Sankofa Leaders, who have led 20 Sankofa Journeys.
WHAT TO EXPECT?

Students begin with a Cultural Agility Seminar and the KnowledgeWorkx 3 Colors of Worldview Assessment, so they arrive with language for what they're about to see. From there, five days of travel through the Deep South. Sites in New Orleans, Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama. Documentaries and Scripture along the way. Long conversations on the bus.
The relational piece matters as much as the itinerary. Students who travel this road together do not come home the same friends they left as.
